ACE Basin, South Carolina – Rice Trunk at Bear Island
|
As rice cultivation required a precise control of freshwater levels in the impoundments, early rice planters developed an ingenious structure called trunks. The trunks' swinging gate would allow water to drain out at low tide, while the water pressure of a rising tide would close it shut. In order to fill a rice field with a rising tide, a trunk working in the opposite direction was used.
